The five essential components of effective reading instruction emphasize the importance of teaching children to read accurately, rapidly, and with comprehension by the end of third grade. These components include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Different approaches to teaching these components exist; most importantly, systematic and explicit instruction highlights the criteria for scientifically based reading research. Emphasizing the importance of early reading proficiency and encouraging the use of scientifically based reading research in instructional decisions is my business.
