Birth to Three Years:

• Recognize books

• Pretend to read

• Develop book routines

• Listen to stories

• Notice print and letters

• Scribble and make letter-like forms


Three to Four Years:

• Develop basic reading/writing skills

• Notice word patterns

• Recognize different text types

• Use new words/grammar

• Show interest in books

• Connect stories to life

• Follow simple instructions


Kindergarten:

• Understand book parts

• Recognize sight words

• Connect texts to experiences

• Listen attentively

• Know different text types

• Answer questions about stories

• Write letters independently

• Distinguish "kid writing" from conventional


Grade 1:

• Begin "real" reading

• Decode words

• Read grade-level texts

• Create written texts

• Show self-correction/spelling awareness


Grade 2-3:

• Read fiction/non-fiction fluently

• Expand vocabulary

• Interpret visual information

• Recall text details

• Respond creatively to texts

• Improve spelling/writing mechanics

• Produce various compositions


Grade 4-5:

• Read complex texts with understanding

• Build background knowledge

• Improve fluency and comprehension

• Engage in rich discussions

• Develop word study skills


Middle School:

• Analyze different text types

• Identify literary devices

• Extract specific information

• Write/read on specific topics


High School and Beyond:

• Master vocabulary, fluency, comprehension
